คำแนะนำในการเลือกนักแปล

• ลูกค้าไม่ควรพิจารณาแค่ค่าบริการเพราะงานแปลราคาถูกมากๆ เช่น หน้าละ 200-300 บาท มักจะสอดคล้องกับคุณวุฒิหรือประสบการณ์ของนักแปล
• หากนักแปลไม่มีคุณวุฒิที่เกี่ยวข้อง ข้อผิดพลาดที่พบได้บ่อยในการแปลภาษาอังกฤษเป็นภาษาไทย คือ การตีความต้นฉบับผิด ส่วนงานแปลจากภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาอังกฤษ ข้อผิดพลาดที่พบได้บ่อยคือนักแปลใช้คำภาษาอังกฤษไม่เหมาะสมหรือใช้โครงสร้างประโยคที่อ่านแล้วไม่เป็นธรรมชาติ
• การคิดค่าแปลเป็นคำนั้นเป็นธรรมทั้งกับลูกค้าและนักแปลเพราะไม่ว่าต้นฉบับจะมีตัวหนังสือขนาดใหญ่หรือเล็ก จำนวนคำก็ยังคงเท่าเดิม ทำให้คำนวณราคาได้ถูกต้อง ลูกค้าสามารถประเมินค่าแปลด้วยตนเองได้คร่าวๆ โดยการดูจำนวนคำในเอกสาร Word ที่มุมล่างซ้าย คูณ ด้วยอัตราค่าแปลต่อคำ กรณีเอกสารเป็น PDF ก็ใช้วิธีตัดแปะเนื้อหาลงใน Word เพื่อนับปริมาณคำได้
• ถ้าทำได้ ลูกค้าควรขอให้ผู้ให้บริการวิชาชีพของลูกค้า เช่น ทนายความ นักบัญชี เป็นผู้แนะนำนักแปล ที่ผู้ให้บริการวิชาชีพของลูกค้าเคยใช้บริการมาก่อนและสามารถยืนยันคุณภาพงานแปลและการรักษาความลับของนักแปลได้
• อย่าตัดสินเพียงเพราะงานแปลอ่านลื่น ภาษาสวย เพราะหลายๆ ครั้งงานแปลเป็นงานที่ “สวยแต่ไม่ซื่อ” นั่นคือ ใช้คำสละสลวยสวยหรูแต่เมื่ออ่านเทียบต้นฉบับแล้ว พบว่าสื่อความหมายเพี้ยนจากต้นฉบับ
• ลูกค้าไม่ควรเสี่ยงจ้างผู้ให้บริการรายอื่นที่ไม่น่าเชื่อถือ ทั้งนี้เพื่อเลี่ยงความเสียหายที่จะเกิดกับลูกค้าเองกรณีผู้ให้บริการรายอื่นที่ไม่น่าเชื่อถือส่งงานล่าช้าหรือส่งงานตามกำหนดแต่งานไม่ได้คุณภาพ
• ผู้ให้บริการที่ดี ต้องแปลเอกสารให้ตรงกับต้นฉบับ เช่น หากต้นฉบับมีการขีดฆ่า แก้ไขด้วยลายมือ ฉบับแปลต้องแสดงให้เห็นว่ามีการขีดฆ่าและมีการแก้ไขด้วยลายมือเช่นกัน อย่าคิดว่าเอกสารแปลถูกขีดฆ่าสกปรกเลอะเทอะ ทั้งนี้เพราะตามหลักการแปลและตามหลักที่กรมการกงสุลยอมรับ เอกสารแปลจะต้องตรงกับต้นฉบับทุกประการ หากมีการประทับตรา ก็ต้องแปลว่า “Official Seal Affixed” หากอ่านไม่ออก ก็ต้องแปลว่า “Illegible”
• งานแปลที่ดีต้องแปลโดยอ้างอิงจากแหล่งอ้างอิงที่น่าเชื่อถือเสมอ เช่น พจนานุกรมฉบับราชบัณฑิตยสถาน, Oxford English Dictionary, อภิธานศัพท์ที่ในกระทรวง ทบวง กรม เป็นต้น
• ลูกค้าควรพิจารณาระยะเวลาที่รอการตอบกลับไม่ว่าทางโทรศัพท์ อีเมล หรือทางช่องทางอื่นๆ อย่างน้อยเพื่อให้ตัดสินใจได้ว่าผู้ให้บริการมีแนวโน้มจะส่งงานตรงเวลาหรือไม่
• ผู้ให้บริการที่มีจรรยาบรรณต้องไม่พูดให้ร้ายเพื่อนร่วมอาชีพ ต้องให้ข้อมูลที่ถูกต้องกับลูกค้าแม้ว่าจะทำให้เสียรายได้จากลูกค้ารายนั้นไปก็ตาม ต้องไม่โอ้อวดในความสามารถที่ตนเองไม่มี และต้องไม่แย่งลูกค้าจากลูกค้าของตนเอง

Tips on choosing a translator

• Do not focus too much on price. Low fees may reflect the translator’s lack of experience or proper training.
  
• Check the credentials of the translator who will work on your project. Look for a translator who has a professional certification, for example, a certification from American Translators Association (ATA).
• Using a large translation agency means you have access to a large pool of translators. This also means that for a single project, your document may be disclosed to too many people. In some cases, this is beyond the ‘need-to-know’ basis.
• Paying per word is fair to both translators and clients since per page rate does not reflect the correct amount of work and the fee due to difference in font size and document format. You can check the number of words in a document in Word. The word count is displayed at the bottom left of the page. If your document is in PDF format, simply cut and paste the text onto a Word document and see the word count.
• Hourly rate applies for translation of texts that come with specific instruction. For example, a translator is requested to do a transcription of the handwritten source text first and then translate it.
• For confidential documents, make sure that the translator that you are hiring has a confidentiality agreement in place.
• If possible, you should ask your professional service provider such as lawyer or accountant to recommend a translator whom they have used.
• A translation that sounds natural or looks perfect, may not always convey the correct the meaning of the source text as intended.
  
• As a general practice, translation must adhere to the format of the source document. If a word is crossed out, the translation of that word should also be crossed out. Where the text is not legible, the translation should also state “Illegible”.
• Good translation should be backed up with reliable references such as government dictionaries (i.e. Royal Institute of Thailand dictionary), glossary of terms published on a ministry’s website.
• Ethics of the profession require that translators should not be dismissive of their fellow translators. They should provide unbiased information about their competitors’ services and should not solicit business from each other’s clients.
